There are two games being played at all times. The short game is about immediate relief, quick wins, the path of least resistance, the choice that feels better now. The long game is about trajectory — the direction being built through repeated choices, the structure being reinforced, the returns being set in motion.

Most people default to the short game not because they prefer it, but because it is louder. The immediate feedback loop of the short game drowns out the quieter signals of the long game.
