Reality First
Before the story. Before the defence. Before the spin. What is actually here right now?
5 min readThe first step of the Pattern is not strategy. It is not goal-setting. It is not optimism or motivation or belief.
It is contact with what is actually here.
This sounds simple. It is not. Most people are almost never in direct contact with reality. They are in contact with their interpretation of it — which is not the same thing.
The gap between reality and interpretation
An event happens. Before you have even registered it fully, the mind is already running narrative. It is already assigning cause, blame, meaning, threat level, story arc. It is already deciding what this means about you, about others, about the future.
By the time you respond to most situations, you are not responding to the situation. You are responding to a compressed, filtered, emotionally edited version of it.
Reality was here before your interpretation. It will be here after. Working from the interpretation instead of the fact is how drift starts.
What reality first actually means
It means stripping the event back to its bare fact before you do anything else.
Not: "they always do this and it means they don't respect me and this is going to spiral."
But: "this thing happened. That is what happened. What is actually here?"
The distinction is not semantic. The first version produces an emotional reaction to a story. The second produces a clear-eyed response to a fact. They lead to completely different outcomes.
The Pattern is not offended
One of the core principles of COGNÂE is that The Pattern does not negotiate with your preferences about what is happening. It does not care that the situation is unfair, poorly timed, or inconvenient. It does not offer comfort. It offers accuracy.
This is not coldness. It is precision. A diagnosis that softens itself to spare your feelings is not a diagnosis — it is flattery. And flattery does not help you correct anything.
The Pattern is. It is not offended, does not bargain, and does not need decorating. This is reality before interpretation.
The practice
Before you respond to any situation of consequence, pause and ask one question: what is the raw fact here, before I have decided what it means?
Write it down if you need to. Say it out loud. Strip the adjectives. Strip the history. Strip the projection.
What is actually here?
That is where the Pattern starts. Not from where you wish you were. Not from where you fear you might be. From exactly where you are.
Follow the Pattern.
